“What’s the difference between soybean traits, and which one is right for your farming operation?”
Selecting the right soybean trait is a strategic part of your weed control and resistance management program. Here’s an overview of the main technologies currently available on the market:
Roundup Ready
Tolerant to glyphosate (Roundup), this trait remains a reliable and widely used option. It simplifies post-emergence weed control and fits well with most cropping systems.
Xtend / XtendFlex
Xtend soybeans are tolerant to dicamba, while XtendFlex adds tolerance to glufosinate (Liberty). These traits provide broader control of broadleaf weeds, particularly effective in areas with high weed pressure or known resistance.
Enlist E3
This technology offers tolerance to glyphosate, glufosinate, and 2,4-D choline. It provides exceptional flexibility in herbicide programs, reduces the risk of drift, and is a strong tool for resistance management.
Key factors to consider when selecting the right soybean trait:
- Weed species and pressure present in your fields
- Crop rotation history and herbicides previously used
- Your overall integrated weed management (IWM) strategy
It’s critical not to mix herbicide systems or technologies in the same field, as doing so can lead to crop injury, reduced efficacy, and increased risk of herbicide resistance.
