Ag Minute – DFO Adjusts SNF Payment Structure: Here’s What It Means for Your Herd

Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO) recently announced an adjustment to how producers are paid for protein and solids-not-fat (SNF).

What’s New?

DFO will now pay 100% of the market value for protein and LOS (lactose and other solids) for milk testing in the 2.0 to 2.2 SNF range. This replaces the previous structure, where only 70% of the market value was paid in this bracket.

The goal is clear: to provide more pay for protein, especially for herds producing milk with strong SNF levels.

A full explanation of these changes is now available on the DFO Member website under Producer News, dated April 2, 2025.

What This Means for You:

  • If your herd typically produces SNF levels above 2.0, this adjustment is a net positive.
  • If you’re under that threshold, it may be time to look at feed strategies and ration formulation to optimize for higher protein and SNF levels.

That said, your first goal is still to fill up quota.
